Nelly gets fierce with ‘Brass Knuckles’
Four long years have passed since Nelly last released a CD - a period marked by the death of his sister, a feminist brouhaha over his randy videos, and money squabbles with his record company. But from the sound of it, you’d think little had changed for him at all. On “Brass Knuckles,” out Tuesday, the rapper continues to emphasize the flow of his vocals far more than his lyrics. Again, he keeps his music as breezy as possible and makes sure to feature more guest stars than every season of the “Love Boat” combined.

ELEANOR Lambert, the 15-year-old daughter of Diane Lane and Christopher Lambert, got a jolt the other night when her mom brought her to a rare screening of the 1981 flick “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains,” in which Lane and Laura Dern play high-schoolers in a punk rock band. “Eleanor was blown away. Diane made the film when she was just 15 and wanted her daughter to see how cool she was back then,” a spy said. The movie, which also stars members of the Clash and the Sex Pistols, is now out on DVD for the first time.
SISTERS Vanessa and Angela Simmons had an awkward run-in with their uncle’s ex the other night. The girls, who starred on MTV’s “Run’s House,” were walking the red carpet at the LeBron James Foundation event when they came face to face with Russell Simmons’ ex-girlfriend Porschla Coleman - on the arm of Dallas Maverick Jason Kidd. A spy relates, “They said hello, but once inside, the girls avoided Porschla all night.” James co-hosted the event with Ralph Lauren, who designed a basketball for auction which reggae artist Sean Paul bought for $1,000.
HIP-hop mogul Irv Gotti is so gangsta, he took the name of the infamous Gambino crime family. (His real name was Lorenzo.) But even a gangster can love his mother. On Friday night, Irv threw a 75th birthday party at the Tribeca Grand for mom Mary “Nee Nee” Lorenzo, and top names in the music industry came to pay homage, including Jay-Z, Diddy, Ja Rule, L.A. Reid and Lyor Cohen. “All my mom wanted for her 75th was a party,” Gotti tells us. “She considers all those huge superstars and executives her family, and she was delighted to see all her family there.”
WHO knew 1950s rockabilly icon Gene Vincent was such a big influence on 1960s psychedelic band The Doors? Former Doors drummer John Densmore, fresh from a victory in a California court forbidding his two surviving former bandmates from using the name The Doors, turned up for the opening of “Be Bop A Lula,” Rex Weiner’s play about the late Vincent and fellow rocker Eddie Cochran, at the Cat Club on the Sunset Strip last week. “Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran were as important to rock ‘n’ roll as Chuck Berry and Little Richard,” Densmore told the standing-room crowd from the same stage where The Doors got their start four decades ago, adding that Cochran’s rollicking “Summertime Blues” just celebrated its 50th anniversary. Vincent’s sister, Tina Craddock, recalled that Doors frontman Jim Morrison “had a man- crush” on Vincent.
THEY’RE a couple made in cheese-monkey heaven. Last week at the House of Hype VMA party in Laurel Canyon, perma-tanned Danity Kane singer Aubry O’Day made out with “Girls Gone Wild” founder Joe Francis in a Ciroc Vodka cabana while Robin Thicke performed onstage. Not that we expect this pairing to last - Francis goes through girls like chewing gum.
