Sarah Palin: 21 Facts About McCain’s VP Pick
In a surprise move, Republican presidential hopeful John McCain tapped Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Palin, who has been governor for 18 months, is unknown on the national stage, but is considered to be a rising star in the GOP. Some believe McCain’s pick is a savvy move meant to pick up the support of conservative women who want to crack that glass ceiling — without Hillary Clinton. Palin, who is strongly anti-abortion, will also be popular among evangelical voters. But Obama’s camp was quick to pounce on her lack of significant experience: “Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency.” Whoever wins come November, we are guaranteed that 2009 will be a historical year with either America’s First Woman VP or first Black Commander in Chief.
Here’s 21 facts about Sarah Palin:
- Served as mayor of Wasilla, an Alaskan town of 6,500 people.
- Supports teaching creationism alongside evolution in schools.
- Hunts and eats moose hamburgers.
- Blew the whistle on Republican corruption in Alaska.
- Wants to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and threatened to sue the federal government for declaring polar bears an endangered species.
- Is a one-time beauty pageant queen, who won Miss Wasilla and finished second in Miss Alaska.
- Has five children.
- Is strongly anti-abortion — even in cases of rape or incest — and is respected by religious conservatives for choosing not to have an abortion after learning that she was carrying a child with Down syndrome.
- Opposes same-sex marriage.
- Was nicknamed “Sarah Barracuda” as a basketball player at Wasilla High School.
- Was the head of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at her high school.
- Is being investigated for possibly ordering the dismissal of Alaska’s safety commissioner because he wouldn’t fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.
- Has a degree in journalism from the University of Idaho.
- Is a lifetime member of the NRA.
- Calls her husband, a commercial fisherman and seasonal worker for BP, the “First Dude.”
- Is 44 years old, three years younger than Obama.
- Describes herself as “just your average hockey mom.”
- Posed for a photo spread in Vogue in 2007.
- Is pushing a natural gas pipeline that would run from Alaska to the lower 48 states.
- Supports capitol punishment.
- Admits to using marijuana when it was legal in Alaska, but says she didn’t like it.

She is a HORRIBLE choice. How many children has she adopted since she wants everyone to have babies so bad? Is she going to take care of all the childen given up for adoption? I seriously doubt it. I found her to be repulsive in every way possible.

Awesome choice! While not as experienced as John McCain, she does have executive experience which is a huge plus. She’s got a rep as a reformer which we need in Washington. I think she will make a wonderful VP! We’ll be lucky to have her!
PS - Now even the Republican VP has more experience than Obama!!!

I think that this woman is just a puppet being used by Mccain for making nice with female voters who would have backed Mrs. Clinton. She admits to using marijuana but would she take any pity on those who use it now? How can she be against abortion in the cases of rape or incest!? Like a previous poster stated; will she be adopting those unwanted children or will they end up in a trash bin for Nancy Grace to rant about? Sure, drilling for oil in Alaska will be a “quick” fix in the oil crisis we face but what about the long term? Where is the foresight into what to do when the oil reserves run dry, and how long will it take for the refineries and pipelines to be of any actual use? Add to that the fact that the use of fossil fuels is destroying the environment and is glaringly inefficient not to mention expensive and you get a problem that needs to be rectified rather than simply have a band-aid applied. She seems to be just as opportunistic as any of the corrupt politicians who currently serve and seems to also regard the wildlife in her own state to be nothing more than trophies to stuff and mount. Not to mention her open opposition to gay marriage makes me physically ill. I’ll say whole-heartedly that Obama’s camp doesn’t really thrill me either yet at the same time I feel that Democratic legislation might be just the ticket for bringing sanity back into government procedures. That is if we can get a democratic candidate into office and have he/she serve a full two terms. we need to at least open the door for a balance of right and left and give the other half of the country room to speak and shape the nation. Republicans do not represent the ideals of the working class, nor do they seek to give anyone in lower income households the chances needed to thrive. Bottom line: If everyone does better then we will see an increase in higher education, prestigious careers and a general upswing in our worth as a whole. If people are happier and make more money then problems like substance abuse and crime decrease and we spend more money. More money spent means a stronger economy and everyone wins.

And another thing, McCain was criticizing Obama for being to much of a “Celebrity” well didnt Palin do a photo spread on Vogue, wouldnt that make her a so called “celebrity” to McCain?
He just picked her b/c he want to make history also by having a women on his side.
